Jacquie Gouveia

Jacquie Gouveia’s artistic philosophy is grounded in the belief that beauty and emotion can be found in simplicity. Her work embodies a quiet, yet powerful, presence that speaks to the universal connection between humans and nature. As Gouveia herself puts it, “My artwork reflects the spiritual nature and power of color. Color has the ability to create a positive energetic vibration. Like the sun, the moon and the stars -color can connect with a person’s spirit and lift their overall being.”

In this blog, we’ll explore the journey of this remarkable artist, her unique painting process, and how her artwork connects with viewers on a spiritual level through the use of color.

A Journey Rooted in Self-Discipline and Exploration

Jacquie Gouveia was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1966. From a young age, she found joy in drawing, starting with beloved Peanuts characters. While her formal education was in business, earning a B.S. in Business Administration/Accounting from Bryant College in 1989, art remained an integral part of her life. In 2000, she made the conscious decision to shift her focus towards painting, sparking a journey of exploration and self-discipline that would become the foundation of her creative process.

Initially, Gouveia immersed herself in plein air painting, a practice where artists paint outdoors to capture natural light and landscapes in real-time. This method offered Gouveia the chance to learn about light and color in a hands-on manner, gaining invaluable knowledge through direct observation of nature. As she honed her skills, Gouveia’s style evolved, and she transitioned from traditional plein air landscapes to abstract landscapes that allowed her to explore color in greater depth.

“I spent years painting on my own, creating smaller plein air landscapes. This process and self-discipline gave me the best education on light and color,” she explains. “I built upon this knowledge and began creating abstract landscape paintings, continuing my focus on color.”

A Unique Artistic Technique Rooted in Balance

What sets Jacquie Gouveia apart is her meticulous and intentional painting technique. Unlike many artists who might mix several colors at once, Gouveia’s process is more deliberate. She works with one color at a time, ensuring that each color is fresh and vibrant before moving on to the next.

“I do not squeeze out multiple paints onto my palette,” she says. “I mix and work with the one color I need, clean my palette, and mix a new color. This keeps my paints fresh. My finished piece needs to feel balanced to me—balanced in the colors I’ve used; a balance in the dark, light, and medium values; and a balance in the quiet areas versus the more detailed, noisy areas.”

This method allows Gouveia to achieve a sense of harmony in her paintings. The quiet areas she refers to create moments of stillness, while the more detailed sections invite viewers to immerse themselves in the complexity of the scene. Her approach to balance extends beyond just color, encompassing the emotional tone of the piece as well.

A Spiritual Connection Through Color

For Gouveia, color is not just a visual tool—it is a spiritual one. Her paintings are imbued with an energy that transcends the canvas, connecting with the viewer on a deeper, more spiritual level. In her own words, “My artwork reflects the spiritual nature and power of color. Color has the ability to create a positive energetic vibration. Like the sun, the moon, and the stars, color can connect with a person's spirit and lift their overall being.”

This philosophy is central to Gouveia’s work, as she believes that color has the power to elevate mood, enhance well-being, and foster a sense of connection to something greater. Whether it’s the calming blues of the ocean or the warm oranges of a sunset, Gouveia’s use of color aims to evoke feelings of peace, happiness, and spiritual elevation.

Recognition and Acclaim

Gouveia’s work has garnered significant recognition in the art world, thanks to her unique style and approach to painting. In 2012, she was named one of the Top 50 Emerging Artists by the editorial staff of the prestigious New York-based magazine, Art Business News. This magazine, which has been the leader in art industry news since 1977, highlighted Gouveia’s potential and contribution to the contemporary art scene.

The following year, in 2013, Gouveia became a featured artist with West Elm, a retail store known for its stylish home furnishings and décor. Her work was showcased in the store’s catalog and on its website, reaching a broader audience and cementing her reputation as an artist with widespread appeal.

Another career milestone came when Gouveia was invited to sell her paintings through the high-end marketplace, 1stdibs, located at the New York Design Center. Gouveia was the first non-New York artist to be invited to this prestigious venue, a testament to the universal resonance of her work.

In 2016, Gouveia was invited to become a member of the Art in Embassies program, which places artwork in U.S. embassies around the world. One of her paintings was in the exhibit from 2016-2020 and was displayed in the residence of Christine Elder, during her term as the U.S. Ambassador to Monrovia, Liberia.

Growth as an Artist and a Person

Like any artist dedicated to their craft, Jacquie Gouveia continues to evolve. “In the last year or so, I’ve grown and realized some new things about myself as an artist and person,” she reflects. “My paintings are changing because of it, but I haven’t yet changed my messaging.”

This growth is evident in her newer works, where she continues to push the boundaries of her creative expression, allowing her art to evolve as she does. Her ever-deepening exploration of color and the emotional impact it has on viewers ensures that her work remains fresh and relevant.
