Meet Artist Elizabeth Janelle

In the bustling world we live in, it's often easy to overlook the natural beauty that surrounds us. However, for artist Elizabeth Janelle, the wonders of nature are not only noticed but celebrated through her captivating paintings and drawings. At 34 years old, Elizabeth has carved a niche for herself as an artist inspired by the scenic landscapes of the Seacoast of New Hampshire, where she resides. In this article, we delve into Elizabeth's artistic journey, her unique creative process, and the stunning pieces that have garnered her recognition.

For Elizabeth Janelle, nature isn't just a backdrop but a constant muse that fuels her creativity. She believes that nature is the most beautiful thing in the world, and this sentiment is evident in every stroke of her brush and pencil. Living on the Seacoast of New Hampshire has provided Elizabeth with an abundance of inspiration, from the majestic mountains to the rhythmic waves of the ocean and the enchanting depths of the forest.

Elizabeth's artistic process is intricately linked to her love for exploration. Whether it's a hike up a mountain, a stroll along the beach, or an immersion in the forest, she finds inspiration in the ever-changing colors and movements brought about by the weather. The synergy between the sun and water, she believes, gives rise to stunning sights that beg to be transformed into art. It is this dynamic interplay of elements that sparks Elizabeth's creativity and sets her on the path to creating extraordinary pieces of art.

Elizabeth's creative process is deeply personal and rooted in her connection with nature. She begins by capturing moments that inspire her, often through photographs taken during her outdoor adventures. Her drawings predominantly feature mountains she has climbed, showcasing not only her artistic talent but also her adventurous spirit.

When it comes to painting, Elizabeth prefers working on cotton stretched canvases with acrylics. Her choice of larger canvases, typically 16x20" and above, allows her to freely express herself, even finishing some paintings in a single day. Remarkably, she manages to add layers of paint throughout the day while juggling the responsibilities of caring for her 3 small children, (including a new baby) at home. The final touch is a high-gloss varnish that enhances the vibrancy of the colors. Light to medium wood floating frames elegantly complete her masterpieces.

In contrast to her larger paintings, Elizabeth's drawings are smaller in scale and executed with pencil, ink, and colored pencil. These intricate drawings often feature trees and plants, reflecting her love for the natural world. To capture these scenes, she searches for mountain views with rich vegetation while hiking, ensuring that her drawings remain authentic expressions of the landscapes she explores.

Elizabeth Janelle's journey as an artist is underpinned by a solid foundation in Studio Art, having earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire in 2011. Her artistic prowess emerged early in life, as she won her first art contest in kindergarten in 1994 on Cape Cod. A pivotal moment in her artistic development came in 2007 when she participated in The Cape Cod Museum of Art’s artist mentor program. This experience culminated in the display of her chalk pastel work at the prestigious Massachusetts State House in Boston. Recent shows Elizabeth has participated in include “Deck the Walls” for TEAM Exeter, NH, “Ties that Bind Show” in Epsom, NH, and the Contemporary Abstract show at the Dover Art Center, NH.

Since graduating in 2011, Elizabeth has continued to make significant strides in her career. She has sold over 300 pieces and items to art enthusiasts across the country, with a notable surge in sales over the past five years. Her dedication to her craft is evident in the diverse range of projects she undertakes. Elizabeth is currently a member of the Women’s Caucus for Art (a national organization) New Hampshire chapter, serving on the exhibitions committee. She also has an upcoming solo exhibition that will be showcased at the Lane Memorial Library in Hampton, NH throughout May 2024 for all to enjoy.
